The President of the Transplant Association of Nigeria, Dr Ebun Bamgboye, has said some Nigerians who travel to India for kidney transplant lose their lives due to the absence of quality care in hospitals in the South Asian country
    .
Bamgboye, a consultant physician and nephrologist, noted that people who did their kidney transplant in Nigeria had better outcomes than those who had theirs abroad.

He spoke on Saturday during an interview with our correspondent on the sideline of a media briefing on a health programme, ‘The August Event.’
The event, organised by St. Nicholas Hospital, Lagos Island, and Moses Majekodunmi Foundation, will hold on Wednesday, August 7, at the Muson Centre, Onikan.
According to Bamgboye, who is the Chairman of the planning committee, medical experts from different parts of the country would discuss the issue of universal health coverage, the challenges facing Nigeria’s health care system and other medical education.
Among the issues, he said, is kidney failure.

Speaking with our correspondent, he warned against the risk of kidney transplant in India.

He said, “I have had cause to follow up a lot of people who went to India. Quite a few people who go there are individuals we could not take because we knew the outcome would not be good. But when they get to India, because those ones want to get money, they just go ahead and do the transplant. And shortly after, the patient comes back and dies.
